Errors in match reports: When Cables are attacking I am either focussing my camera to try to get a good action shot for the website or trying to stop my notebook and pen from falling on the floor! Not only that, but I have the world's worst memory for names and faces! With these factors to take into account it is inevitable that there will sometimes be mistakes in reports (e.g. the wrong player credited as having put in the cross that led to the goal). I email my reports to the non-league paper early Saturday evening (home matches only) then put them on the website and email them to the programme editor. If you spot a mistake it will probably be too late for the NLP, but if you email me I will correct any mistakes on the website version and arrange for the corrected version to be in the next match programme.

Guiseley 1 Cables 0

FA Cup sponsored by E.ON 2nd Qualifying Round Replay

Tuesday 2 October 2007

This replay began brightly with both teams playing expansive football.

Cables were forced to bring in Craig Bryan to replace the injured Mottram in goal. He was soon in the action following a quick break by Guiseley culminating in Swift's effort that the Prescot keeper saved. A clearance from a Guiseley corner found the Prescot front men Byers and Price exploiting space in the home sides' defensive ranks. They had moments to test keeper Dickinson but in the end this was squandered and the cover defence managed to block an attempt on goal.

A quick free kick by Bowden caught out Guiseley, Eammon Price was not able to connect properly with a shot on the turn. The Prescot striker had a similar opportunity from Ridler's header, this time a volley cleared the bar. Bryan made an important stop from Pell as he connected with a header from Krief's cross.

Prescot then produced their best move of the season so far involving Price, Murphy and Byers. Price attempted the shot on goal but unfortunately failed to hit the target. The vital moment of this cup tie arrived in the 42 minute. A long throw was flicked on to Bett whose goal bound effort was saved excellently by Bryan. He could only parry the ball away into the path of an unmarked Krief who made no mistake from close range.

The second period began as the first with both sides playing open football.

Cables were fortunate to escape when Bryan appeared to have control of the ball from a free kick. He fumbled and after a brief scramble the ball swerved over the crossbar. With Prescot chasing the game they sometimes fell into the trap of using 'route one' football. This was easily dealt with by the tall Guiseley defenders. The home side created a number of opportunities that they were unable to convert. Bett and Swift were guilty of missed chances to finish the game off. Guiseley nearly paid for this at the end. The usually reliable Wilford mistimed the bounce of the ball that enabled Price to race into the penalty area. He did not have the ball totally under control and as a consequence was stretching as he attempted to put the game into extra time.

The ball went wide and so too Cables' chance of a third round tie against Vauxhall Motors on 13th October.
