FA Cup sponsored by E.ON 2nd Qualifying Round
Saturday 29 September 2007
The stalemate at Valerie Park meant that the two teams will play each other three times in a week. Guiseley was looking to make amends for losing their undefeated start to the season in the midweek televised match at Gateshead. They began this FA Cup tie in the ascendancy. Karl Bell almost presented Guiseley with the perfect start by slicing the ball perilously across the face of his own goal. Moments later Swift was allowed too much time to aim a shot that had Richie Mottram beaten. Prescot was saved by the upright. The fitness of the Cables keeper was causing some concern. Cables did have some spells of possession; however, the ball was not behaving kindly when they found decent positions in the visitors area. Anthony Bowden had the best opportunity forcing a save from Dickinson with a 30 yard drive from a free kick.
Shortly into the second period, Lee Smith's determination to get to the ball first allowed Gavin Lynch with a run on goal. Dickenson managed to beat him to the ball. Prescot was forced into replacing Mottram as he could not continue with the groin injury sustained in the midweek match against Ashton United. Peter Collis took over between the sticks in the 65th minute. He was soon brought into action saving at the near post to deny Krief.
The referee allowed play to continue when Bell fouled Pell as Guiseley found themselves in a promising situation. Krief attempted a lob that defeated the advancing keeper. This time the crossbar saved Prescot. The deadlock was broken on 73 minutes by Swift's speculative shot that dipped over Collis's head.
The home side, naturally, pushed forward. With ten minutes remaining, Connolly's header was directed into the path of James Devers just inside the Guiseley area. He made room for himself and struck a blinding shot that crashed into the top corner. Guiseley came back with substitute Pell rounding off a neat move with an effort that screwed wide. In stoppage time Pell was even closer with a header that just missed the post as the Cables support held their breath and earned a replay on Tuesday evening (2/10).
