Prescot began this game the way they finished their last. Eammon Price and Darren Byers continued their partnership up front. It was Price who won a corner from which Bell had a free header that could only find the hands of keeper Smith. The breakthrough arrived soon after when Kendal failed to clear a free kick. Paul Sparrow mistimed a header and the ball looped into the air. Price was allowed time for the ball to drop and he struck a perfect volley past the stricken goalkeeper. Anthony Bowden then came forward and linked up with Price. Bowden's shot sliced into the path of Byers who brought off a save by Smith. Kendal had their fair share of possession. One their attacks petered out that enabled Price to break through an off-guard defence. His lob over the advancing keeper disappointingly failed to hit the target. Kendal made Cables pay for these misses. Peter Wright exploited space on Cables left flank after Murphy was out of position following a tackle. Mulvaney knocked away the cross to level the scores. Prescot was nearly caught out again when Redhead skied his attempt over the bar.
It was the home side who came out after the interval with intent. Darren Byers' persistence paid off when he forced Woods into a foul. Kendal could not deal with the cross properly that allowed Karl Bell to charge his way through to head Prescot back into the lead.
The visitors gradually forced the pace. They were playing the more attractive and expansive football. Cables were relying on opportunist breaks, although they created the more dangerous chances to score. Substitute Rendell's chip into the 6 yard area caused a tussle between Price, a defender and keeper. All somehow missed the ball but ended up in a heap behind the goal line. Cables were living on their nerves as Kendal strived for the equaliser. The Hope Street outfit held out after 6 minutes of overtime to register a 100% winning start to the season.
Man of the Match : Karl Bell marshalled the side well. He was supported ably by Scott Murphy who showed a cool head in a second half fracas. Overall it was Eammon Price with his energy, speed and a possible goal of the season that took the accolade.
