Errors in match reports: When Cables are attacking I am either focussing my camera to try to get a good action shot for the website or trying to stop my notebook and pen from falling on the floor! Not only that, but I have the world's worst memory for names and faces! With these factors to take into account it is inevitable that there will sometimes be mistakes in reports (e.g. the wrong player credited as having put in the cross that led to the goal). I email my reports to the non-league paper early Saturday evening (home matches only) then put them on the website and email them to the programme editor. If you spot a mistake it will probably be too late for the NLP, but if you email me I will correct any mistakes on the website version and arrange for the corrected version to be in the next match programme.

Email contact: Because of the amount of spam I receive I have inserted the words NOSPAM into the email addresses on this page. You will have to remove those words for the email to work.

Cables 0 Liverpool 1

Prescot Cables put their league worries behind them and played their part in a thoroughly entertaining cup tie.

The visitors came close after two minutes when Jay Spearing saw his shot saved by Richie Mottram in Cables' goal. Two minutes later Peter Murphy took a free kick for the home side but David Martin saved the shot.

The next goalmouth action fell to the visitors when Jordi Brouwer had a shot saved after 14 minutes.

Ryan Wade looked bright for the home side and was unlucky not to score after 18 minutes when his shot was blocked. Cables had another good chance 7 minutes later when Murphy's free kick was headed over by Liam Kennedy. Half time Cables 0 Liverpool 0.

The first good chance of the second half fell to the home side when Kennedy put Wade through. Wade's chip went through Martin's legs but did not have the power to reach the goal line.

The next real goalscoring opportunity was 12 minutes from time when a corner from the left found its way to Steve McEwen at close range. The look of disappointment on McEwen's face when the goalkeeper blocked the shot with his legs showed how desperately Cables wanted to win this match. Three minutes later Craig Lindfield had a shot saved for the visitors, but everyone was now settling down to the inevitable extra time. Full time Cables 0 Liverpool 0.

Five minutes had elapsed before either goalkeeper was troubled. James Croxton's shot was safely collected by Martin. By the time the second half of extra time began both sides had made substitutions. Both sets of supporters were wondering if the managers were bringing on their favoured penalty takers.

The second half of extra time was half way through when a moment of brilliance clinched the tie for the visitors. Substitute Daniel Pacheco collected the ball on the right hand side of the pitch and ran across to the left to make space for himself before despatching a left-foot shot past Mottram to take the visitors into the final. Final score Cables 0 Liverpool 1.

Cables can hold their heads high after this performance: if they play their last two league games the way they played this game they can forget the spectre of relegation. Their performance will have won them many new friends amongst the 1387 who were present - the highest gate at Prescot for many years. We hope some of those new friends will come back on Saturday when we play Whitby in our last home game of the season. Finally, a word of thanks must go to the Prescot schoolboys who served as ballboys on the night.
