Errors in match reports: When Cables are attacking I am either focussing my camera to try to get a good action shot for the website or trying to stop my notebook and pen from falling on the floor! Not only that, but I have the world's worst memory for names and faces! With these factors to take into account it is inevitable that there will sometimes be mistakes in reports (e.g. the wrong player credited as having put in the cross that led to the goal). I email my reports to the non-league paper early Saturday evening (home matches only) then put them on the website and email them to the programme editor. If you spot a mistake it will probably be too late for the NLP, but if you email me I will correct any mistakes on the website version and arrange for the corrected version to be in the next match programme.

Cables 1 Matlock Town 2

Cables were thrown off their stride by an early goal which was scored when everyone on the pitch had stopped for an offside decision.

Matlock's Lawrence Hall had passed the ball to Gary Webster who was clearly offside. Webster crossed to Simon Barraclough, who looked for the linesman's flag before slotting the ball home to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

This early setback seemed to knock Cables off their stride and Matlock looked far more likely to score for the next 15 minutes or so, with Hall and Webster heading wide after three and five minutes respectively.

Cables began to get back into the game with Anthony Bowden coming close on 20 minutes with a shot that went wide. Fifteen minutes later Eamonn Price passed to Bowden whose shot was always too close to goalkeeper Andy Richmond. Two minutes later Bowden took a corner from the right. His cross found the head of Thomas Moore, only for the ball to go over the bar.

Half-time Cables 0 Matlock Town 1

Four minutes into the second half Cables were given a free kick just inside Matlock's half. Bowden's perfectly-weighted shot seemed to go straight into the net, though the goal was credited to Karl Bell. Video. The goal seemed to give Cables added confidence and they played far better in the second half than they had in the first.

The referee seemed to make amends for his mistake in the first half that led to Matlock's goal with an absolutely bizarre decision after 54 minutes. A shot from the visitors was clearly goalbound until Karl Bell superbly headed the ball to the safety of the touchline. As both sides lined up for the corner the referee signalled a goal-kick!

After 59 minutes Steve Circuit had an excellent shot for the visitors only to see Cables' goalkeeper Richie Mottram make an excellent save: one of several he made in a man-of-the-match performance.

There was little goal-mouth action in this half until Thomas Moore shot over after 74 minutes. But two minutes later it was all over when Hall received the ball from a throw-in on the right-hand side and shot past Mottram to make the final score Cables 1 Matlock Town 2.
