Cables snatched victory in this match with a headed goal from Shaun Tierney two minutes into stoppage time.
Karl Connolly made his presence felt from the start with a shot after only 14 seconds. Goalkeeper Chris Sanna did well to save the shot.
Stamford's Leon Mettam squandered the first of several chances when he shot wide after nine minutes.
Connolly again came close for Cables after 20 minutes when he had a shot cleared off the line from Gavin Lynch's cross. Ten minutes later the ever-impressive Ryan Wade also shot wide.
This had been an even game with Cables just having the better of the play, so justice seemed to be done after 32 minutes when Colin Flood played the ball up the field to Lynch who shot the home side into a 1-0 lead from the edge of the penalty area.
Lynch nearly doubled the lead after 39 minutes when Wade passed to him at close range, but the shot was cleared off the line. Half-time Cables 1 Stamford 0.
Cables were showing signs of tiredness from a hard-fought midweek cup victory over higher-division opposition, and it was by no means against the run of play that Stamford levelled the scores after 52 minutes. A corner from the left found the head of Adam Jones who made the score 1-1.
As the match progressed, Cables looked more and more tired, and the general feeling around the ground was that Stamford were the more likely team to snatch the win. But despite the visitors dominating the half, it was the home side who created more goalmouth chances, with Wade looking particularly dangerous.
Ten minutes from time came one of Andy Gray's inspired substitutions. Ex-pro Connolly gave way to the younger legs of Shaun Tierney. Tierney was only on the pitch for a relatively short time, but it was he who received the ball from a cross from the left two minutes into stoppage time and sent a bullet header flying into the net. No sooner had Stamford kicked off to restart the match than the referee blew the final whistle. The Stamford players deserve credit for the sporting way they accepted defeat having so dominated the second half.
Man of the Match: There were several players named including Ian McAuley who recently stepped up three divisions when he joined Cables. The most votes, however, were received by Karl Connolly.
Entertainment: *** out of five.
