Errors in match reports: When Cables are attacking I am either focussing my camera to try to get a good action shot for the website or trying to stop my notebook and pen from falling on the floor! Not only that, but I have the world's worst memory for names and faces! With these factors to take into account it is inevitable that there will sometimes be mistakes in reports (e.g. the wrong player credited as having put in the cross that led to the goal). I email my reports to the non-league paper early Saturday evening (home matches only) then put them on the website and email them to the programme editor. If you spot a mistake it will probably be too late for the NLP, but if you email me I will correct any mistakes on the website version and arrange for the corrected version to be in the next match programme.

Warrington 1 Cables 2 (after extra time)

After a waterlogged pitch caused this match to be postponed twice, Cables finally managed to tangle with The Wire.

Cables appeared to have adopted a "shoot on sight" policy with Eddie Taylor, Phil Cooney, and Darren Byers all having long-range shots in the first half. Warrington had two noteworthy chances in the half. The first was when a route-one ball found its way to Martin Bell who shot wide from 25 yards; the second when Mike Owens headed wide from a corner on the stroke of half-time.

Shane McWeeney in Warrington's goal was in inspired form, but at times he had reason to be grateful to his defenders for a series of clearances off the line in the second half.

Mid-way through the half the visitors appeared to have decided they did not want extra time: a spell of sustained pressure brought the best out of McWeeney and ended when Byers headed wide.

No sooner had Cables' spell of pressure ended than Warrington took the lead. Owens took a free kick from the left and found Cables' old-boy Carl Rendell in space to blast the home side ahead.

Ten minutes later Gavin Lynch levelled the scores with a close-range shot from the left. From this point on it was one-way traffic.

Three minutes into stoppage time (apparently the referee didn't want extra time either!) Byers had a shot deflected by a defender and McWeeney safely collected the ball. The match was now destined for extra time.

The first half of extra time belonged to Cables with four corners. Warrington didn't have an attack of note during this period.

Cables nearly took the lead in the 107th minute, but this was one of those occasions when McWeeney had cause to be grateful to his defence as a goal-bound header was kicked off the line.

There appeared to be a good-luck charm on the home goal as chance after chance was cleared off the line. With a little over two minutes separating the sides from the dreaded penalty-kick lottery, Cables' breakthrough finally arrived. A corner from the right found Mick O'Donnell in space and he blasted Cables into the semi-final.
