Errors in match reports: When Cables are attacking I am either focussing my camera to try to get a good action shot for the website or trying to stop my notebook and pen from falling on the floor! Not only that, but I have the world's worst memory for names and faces! With these factors to take into account it is inevitable that there will sometimes be mistakes in reports (e.g. the wrong player credited as having put in the cross that led to the goal). I email my reports to the non-league paper early Saturday evening (home matches only) then put them on the website and email them to the programme editor. If you spot a mistake it will probably be too late for the NLP, but if you email me I will correct any mistakes on the website version and arrange for the corrected version to be in the next match programme.

Witton Albion 6 Cables 1

Tuesday 9 October 2007

It is difficult to convince those readers who did not attend this game that Prescot actually played well. Witton fans were not too confident shortly before halftime, having only a one goal advantage, led one supporter to spout that 'this game will finish in a draw'. The parallels with the FA Cup match last month were there for all to see.

Cables made changes to their line-up following their Guiseleyathon - Connolly, Molyneux, Stannard and Mottram all starting. They made an encouraging start pressing the Premier League leaders back into their own half. It was the visitors who had the ball in the net first. Price intercepted a poor Witton pass and found Molyneux in space who produced a curling cross that Stannard managed to direct a header towards Connolly. He knocked the ball past keeper Kennedy but unfortunately was in an offside position.

The ball was nestling in the corner of the Cables net moments later following a long free kick. Prescot was unable to deal with the situation and allowed Pritchard a header that drifted perfectly over the stretching Mottram. Prescot continued to have the majority of possession. There were worrying signs for Cables, however, as Witton was using runners from deep to combat the visitors' attempts at forcing offside.

Marvin Molyneux's determination enabled him to thread a ball through to Lynch. An early pass was required as Price was unmarked. The Prescot player attempted to go round defender Barras inside the penalty area and in the process seemed to be pulled down. The assistant referee flagged for an offence that was ignored by his colleague in the middle.

The rains greeted the players for the second half. Your correspondent was taking refreshment when Dave MacPherson was passing the ball into the Cables net - not more that 30 seconds after the re-start.

Not surprisingly Witton then played some confident and expansive football. This was halted when Prescot was presented with a lifeline courtesy of Eammon Price's run into the penalty area. He was adjudged to have been brought down. Thomas Moore calmly put away the spot kick.

Cables began to have thoughts of coming away with some points. This came to an end in the 67th minute when Dever mistimed a sliding challenge just outside the area. Prescot's markers were not existent as substitute Proffitt gratefully headed in Lloyd's pass.

Prescot strived to recover but the game was put beyond them by Rob Lloyd's individual goal.

Cables defence was opened up again when Proffitt glided into space and beat the advancing Mottram.

Everything was running the home side's way. Prescot supporters hoping the referee would stop the contest prematurely.

The half dozen almost arrived when another weighted ball allowed Warlow to control and smash the ball against underside of the bar. Seconds later the sixth did arrive after Substitute Smith offended near the touchline following the re-bound. Kearney then headed into the far corner from the free kick.

Only the heroics of goalkeeper Mottram avoided the spectre of double figures.

The final result was the worse defeat since the 1971/72 FA Cup tie at home to Runcorn (unless anybody knows differently). The glory of that sunny afternoon in September was now a very distant memory.
