Errors in match reports: When Cables are attacking I am either focussing my camera to try to get a good action shot for the website or trying to stop my notebook and pen from falling on the floor! Not only that, but I have the world's worst memory for names and faces! With these factors to take into account it is inevitable that there will sometimes be mistakes in reports (e.g. the wrong player credited as having put in the cross that led to the goal). I email my reports to the non-league paper early Saturday evening (home matches only) then put them on the website and email them to the programme editor. If you spot a mistake it will probably be too late for the NLP, but if you email me I will correct any mistakes on the website version and arrange for the corrected version to be in the next match programme.

Cables 1 Witton Albion 0

An impartial observer at this Unibond Premier League match would have been hard pushed to say which side was top of the league as Cables made a mockery of their league position.

Witton had the better of the opening 20 minutes but found Cables' goalkeeper Zak Hibbert in inspired form. This form was admirably demonstrated after 26 minutes when the referee awarded the visitors a penalty for pushing. Hibbert confidently collected the ball to the delight of the home supporters.

The fact that Cables had survived all the early pressure seemed to boost the confidence of the home players and the rest of the first half was much more even. The best opportunities of the half for Cables fell to Phil Cooney and Darren Byers who both had shots saved by Witton's goalkeeper Jon Kennedy.

The second half was very even with Hibbert making another good save on 51 minutes and Liam Kennedy heading wide for the home side three minutes later.

After 66 minutes Witton must have thought they had taken the lead when a shot from Cables' old boy Mark Peers seemed goalbound. Another fine save from Hibbert gave the visitors a corner.

After 71 minutes Ryan Wade, under pressure from Brian Pritchard, shot home from close range to give Cables a 1-0 lead.

The greatest remaining threat for Cables came three minutes after they had taken the lead, when a mix up in the defence left Tony Evans chasing the ball for an open goal. But this was Cables' day and Evans could not get the ball close to the goal from the angle he left himself.

The final whistle was greeted by a rousing cheer from the home fans: three vital points lift them a little further from the relegation zone.
